Jay - Year 1
Welcome to Jay Class Page!
Class Timetable
Week Beginning Monday 5th May 2025
We are currently reading stories about Journey stories and weather related books in Jay Class.
Our model text this half of Summer term is Dogger. We will be learning to retell the story using a story map and actions as a whole class. We will be examine lots of different aspects of the text including; using adjectives to describe the adventure in a descriptive piece of writing, and then innovating the story as a class by designing our own 'journey story'. At the end of this half-term we will be inventing our own journey story based on a story that travels to different locations. In phonics, a real focus on segmenting and blending words with 4 or more sounds will be our focus, including reading words with consonant clusters. Children will continue to read and write those high frequency common words in spellings and handwriting sessions, as well as reading both 'real' and 'alien' words in readiness for the Year 1 phonics screen test.
In Maths, we will start the term by identifying fractions. Children will learn how to find half and quarter of an amount. We will also be looking at numbers from 0 to 100. Children especially need practice at counting back. We will learn to partition 2-digit numbers into tens and ones in order to strengthen our knowledge of place value. We will also be practising different methods for addition and subtraction calculations with numbers 0-50. The use of numberlines, beadstrings and ten frames will all be used to explore calculation.
