Our model text this half-term:
In English this half-term, we will be writing quest stories around the theme of magical beasts, with a focus on character and dialogue. We have started learning our model text, Beware of the Bear Hawk, a quest story featuring the ferocious Bear Hawk, who a young explorer stumbles upon during their adventures in the wild, windy mountains. Please see our model text below. Our learning will culminate with children creating their own magical beasts, and writing their own quest stories about them.

Beware of the Bear Hawk
One clear morning, a young explorer set off on a brave quest through the wild, windy mountains. She was searching for a magical creature that lived beyond the steep, stony paths.
Suddenly, there was a loud thud.
“WHO IS WALKING ON MY LAND?” boomed a voice.
The explorer froze. “Did you say that?” she asked her old, leather map.
“No,” said the map, “that was not me!”
Out lumbered a massive, shaggy creature with a thick brown bear body and huge hawk wings. It had sharp, golden talons, a curved, snapping beak and small, piercing eyes.
“I am the Bear Hawk,” it growled. “And I do not like visitors!”
“A talking beast!” cried the explorer. She ran and ran until she reached a narrow bridge, where a tiny mouse sat on a cracked stone.
“Why are you running so fast?” squeaked the mouse.
“Because a Bear Hawk spoke to me!” said the explorer.
“That cannot be true,” said the mouse.
“Oh yes it can!” roared the Bear Hawk, swooping down from the sky.
The explorer shrieked and ran again, over the shaky bridge and through the cold valley, until she reached the shining castle. There, she saw the Queen sitting on a soft, velvet throne.
“Why do you hurry when the sky is so blue?” asked the Queen.
“First the Bear Hawk spoke to me, and then my map and a mouse too, and now the Bear Hawk is following me!” cried the explorer.
“Do not be foolish,” said the Queen. “Mice, maps and beasts cannot talk.”
The Queen leaned back on her tall, wooden throne.
Suddenly, the throne creaked, “Quite right! Who ever heard of a talking Bear Hawk?”
The Queen gasped. The guards stared. The Bear Hawk spread its enormous wings.
The whole castle went silent.
