Year 1. Autumn term curriculum map - 'The Enormous Turnip'
Reception Autumn Term Curriculum Map - 'The Enormous Turnip'
Our key text for this half-term is ‘The Enormous Turnip’. Cumulative stories that repeat actions and language within the text, plants growing, harvest, and a visit to our local allotments within Wicklewood, will all be at the heart of our curriculum this Autumn. We will be learning about ourselves and the similarities and differences between ourselves and others within our school community. We will explore the values that underpin our school and the learning powers required to be the very best learners at Wicklewood school. We will explore the work of artists Paul Cezanne and Giusepppe Arcimboldo to make still-life drawings of harvested vegetables and fruits as well as using these to make our very own self-portraits. We will design and make our very own soups, sing songs, rhymes and compose our own music relating to the theme of foods and harvest.
In maths, reception children will match, sort and arrange objects into sets using both pictures and the natural objects we find around us. They will explore, copy and create both linear and circular patterns using colour, shape and object type as the stimuli. Counting rhymes and songs will be a regular activity for the children, as well as comparing amounts using the language more and less. In year 1, children will count forwards and backwards using numbers from 1-100. They will practice reading and writing the numerals and words for numbers 1-10. The children will explore a range of mathematical scenarios involving both addition and subtraction calculations. They will use objects and pictorial representations to explore and explain their maths.
Our theme for circle times will be ‘Being in My World’, where we will have opportunities to learn more about our class and the individuals within it, as well as design our own 'learning charter' that will support us to know the skills required to be the best possible learners we can be at Wicklewood school.
The outdoor environment will inform a large extent of our curriculum, so be sure to have your welly boots and waterproof suits at school everyday so that we can all make the most of our outdoor provision. Plants will underpin our science/understanding of the world sessions where we will observe, identify and grow different garden plants. Seasonal changes and the weather will be a study throughout the school year for both our reception and year 1 children. We will start with Autumn, as we use our senses and collect objects relating to this season and the weather we would expect to see at that time of year.
Year 1 children will have PE once a week on Monday afternoon, so they will be expected to come into school on this day wearing their PE kit. We follow the 'Get Set for PE' curriculum in Year 1 and this term we will learn some fundamental knowledge and skills that will help inform our PE sessions for the rest of the year. Please note, reception children will not have formal PE lessons until the Spring term, when they will take part in a reception/Keystage 1 dance performance.
Please check the weekly timetables for Starling class, to keep an eye on the learning that will take place each week and don't forget to click on the home learning tab weekly to see how you can support your child with their learning at home. As always, if you have any questions about our curriculum content come and speak to your class teacher who will be happy to assist.
