This week is National Picnic Week, so the family challenge is all about fun with food!

Please visit the website below to inspire you to have fun with your family and create the ‘Perfect Picnic’ to have together at some point when the weather is favourable! Or just hold one in the rain instead with umbrellas in true ‘British’ Style!

The picnic has been a firm favourite of Great Britain for many years. The history behind the picnic is very interesting and looking at different photos of the ‘Great British’ picnics from the past is a great

way to see how they have changed over centuries. The word picnic comes from the French word ‘pique-nique’ (first documented in written form in 1692) but it was adopted here and became a favourite past time of the Victorians especially! Feel free to learn more by visiting the following websites:


Whole Family

This week you have a really fun (but potentially messy) challenge to do as a family – we want you to make the tallest jelly you can!! The rules and some jelly information are on the separate document – you will need to use lots of ingenuity as well as your scientific knowledge and understanding. Make sure you plan well! Watch the video on the link below to learn how to make Vegetable Lego. Will you choose a crocodile, penguin or even a racing car? You could try to create your own masterpiece. The website below gives more details and instructions.

Vegetable carving involves using a sharp knife. Please ask an adult to do the cutting and you can assemble it.

Family Cooking Challenge

Feeling hungry? Why not have some family fun in the kitchen and make your own pizzas.

The Royal Academy of Culinary Arts Chefs have created a pizza recipe and instructions for you on the Countryside Classroom website. There are so many delicious and healthy toppings you can add – make sure you try a few out.

Giuseppe Arcimboldo was an Italian painter. He is well known today for painting portraits of people made out of different types of fruits, vegetables, meat and fish.

Below are some examples of Arcimboldo’s work.

Have a go at making your own food portrait. Look at the ‘Arcimboldo design sheet’ (at the bottom of the page). Think about which foods you would use for different parts of the portrait.

Once you have completed your plan, you are ready to complete your masterpiece. You do not have to use real food. You could cut pictures out of magazines or even draw pictures of the food, cut them out and then arrange them to create your portrait.

Try these food themed activities on your tablet or computer.

YR/KS1 – Purple Mash

Pizza or Cake 2Dos – Get creative with your digital art to design your own pizza or birthday cake.

Chef 2Do – Use the MashCam to take a photo of yourself as a chef. Write a sentence about your favourite meal remembering finger spaces (space bar), capital letters (shift key) and full stops. Y1 and Y2 should use adjectives (describing words) and try to use the conjunction ‘because’ to say why it’s your favourite food. Use the sound buttons to record your voice reading your own writing!

This work will be added to a Purple Mash Display Board so you can share your work with your friends. Let your teacher know in the comments box when you hand your work in if you don’t want it to be shared.

KS2 – Code Monkey Adventure

Go to to help a hungry, cute monkey catch his bananas in 30 fun-filled coding challenges! As you play, you will meet different animals that will guide you along the way. You will use code and think outside the box to win as many stars as possible. Good luck!

This resource works on P.C.s, laptops and tablets but not mobile devices.

This challenge is free to play but an adult will need to register you for an account if you wish to save your progress.

Everyone enjoys different foods from all over the world, which is fantastic, but where your food comes from is an essential part of understanding your role in your own carbon footprint. Food that is seasonal in this country and locally produced is a great way to ensuring you are supporting local businesses and farmers and plays a little part in protecting the Earth at the same time. The idea of ‘plough to plate’ or ‘farm to fork’ is so important, especially in the current climate of change and moving forward as a sustainable planet.

Have a look at some of the foods in your fridge or cupboard……

Do you know where your food comes from?

What country was it grown or made in?

How did it get to the Supermarket?

Did it have to travel on an aeroplane or was it produced in the UK or maybe even Norfolk?

Use an atlas and have a go at locating on a map where the different foods in your house have come from.

How many miles did it have to travel to get to a Wymondham Supermarket?

Use the food miles calculator at to help you calculate the distance your food has travelled.

This is a great chance for you to find out more about the food you eat, the countries which produce it and explore the concept of food miles even more.

Who doesn’t love a nice picnic? As part of your wellbeing and happiness this week, we thought you could have a picnic with your family. It could be in your garden, a favourite scenic spot or somewhere else! There is a suggestion of ‘extreme picnics’ on the National Picnic Website so if this idea makes you smile, feel free to find somewhere ‘extreme’ to eat your picnic! Make sure you take a photo of your perfect picnic spot and add it to the Purple Mash Family Challenge Blog so everyone can enjoy seeing your happy faces. Spread the happiness and have fun!

Family Challenge 15th June

At this time most of you are probably at home much more than usual and so it seemed right to think about our homes and why they are so important to everyone. What is special about your home? Is it the things in it, or is it the people, or is it both?

Some people have to leave their homes and try and find a safer place to live.

Refugee Week is taking place this week, and 20th June is World Refugee Day.

Locally we also celebrate “Norfolk Welcomes.” This is a special event where people in Norfolk try to make others, who have had to flee their homes, welcome.

Remember that there is no expectation for you to complete all these activities. Pick and choose the activities that interest and inspire you.  Have fun, keep learning and stay safe.

Houses in England have changed over the ages. Have a look at the different pictures of homes and information on homes from the Celts to Modern Day using the website below. Discuss some of the differences you can see. It might be nice to discuss why different materials were used at that time in history or specific designs depending on the needs at the time. How a house is used has dramatically changed over time too and having specific spaces or rooms for cooking, eating, sleeping and entertaining is a relatively modern-day concept. Think about how your family has had to use your home differently in the past few weeks!

Choose a specific period you are interested in and research in greater depth what the houses were like. Remember they are likely to have been dramatically different from each other depending on the amount of money you had, so you might need to refine your searches even further. Do you know the history of your house? This might be something to research, if possible, too.

It is important to remember that homes around the world dramatically differ from one another as well. The climate and natural resources play a huge part in determining the materials, styles and layout. Watch the following video which shows you examples of how houses differ between the different continents and discuss:

Why has it been designed the way it has? See if you can find other examples of houses from that part of the world to see what else people live in.

Use a shoebox or similar as the base for your room. Use resources from around your house to design and make items to go inside your room.

At the moment our homes are where we work, rest and play – we can’t go on the play equipment in the parks or do our sports activities after school. We all know how important moving is to how good we feel, so can you get inventive with what you have at home to help you keep going? Have a go at the Home Gym challenge document.

Don’t forget about Miss Marriott’s virtual sports day too.

Using someone’s language is a sure way to make them feel at home. Have a look at the posters of “welcome” in different languages. Can you recognise any of the words? Are some of them like our own word?

EYFS/KS1 – can you use the pictures of the flags to help you find out which country the greetings are from?

KS2 – try typing the different words into . You should see a title that says

‘Detect language’ over the left-hand box. If you click at the top of the right box to show English and then type the word you are trying to translate into the left hand box, it will translate the word into welcome and show you which language it has detected. You can also scroll down and click on the little megaphone to hear how it sounds. Can you learn how to say some?

If you look at the slides in the Norfolk Welcome PowerPoint, from 11 onwards you will find some activities using words of welcome.


This website has a video about a dinosaur who has to leave his home, together with his owner Sana who make a difficult journey to come to the UK. There are some activities to try afterwards. There is also an explanation about being a refugee. Choose from a selection of activities to try!

Which house would you choose? What would you put in it? What would your bed be like? Have fun choosing your future home and its contents!

Have a look at the ‘Types of Houses and Homes’ PowerPoint for ideas for houses in the UK.

Use your imagination and draw or paint where you would like to live.

EYFS and KS1

Have a go at the 2Do’s set on Purple Mash.

Can you go to the building site and build your own home? Don’t forget to add a roof, windows and a door.

Use the paint program to design your own house. Which material will you use for the walls? Which material will you use for the roof?

KS2 (some older KS1 children might enjoy this activity too)

Use the database set as a 2do on Purple Mash to find the answers to the quiz questions.


If you are not sure how to search the database to find the answers, click this button in the top right-hand corner of the database and watch a video to show you what to do.

The simple quiz has easier questions to answers. The advanced quiz is slightly trickier and involves searching for 2 different criteria to find the answer.

Did you know that Freddie Mercury from Queen came from Zanzibar, Rita Ora from Kosovo or that M.I.A came from Sri Lanka?

KS1 and KS2

Imagine you had to leave your home behind. What would you take if you could only take a suitcase or a backpack? Why not draw a picture of your special things and say why you would want to take them with you?

What ways do you make someone feel ’at home’ and happy? Have a go at making sure your home is a welcoming environment and a happy place to be this week. You might cook dinner for your parents or run a bath for someone who has come back from work, or tidy up a space to make it feel relaxing. I wonder if they will notice the nice changes.
