Lapwing Class wc 29th June

I hope you had a wonderful week last week lovely Lapwings – I hope you are not as frazzled as this picture with all of that hard work consolidating your SPaG skills!

I have once again set maths and English learning for the week and you have the family challenge to have a go at too.

Stay safe. Miss Marriott

Maths – we are moving on to statistics this week as we have not done much of this during this year.

^^ We are skipping ahead to follow the week commencing 29/6/20 on White Rose Maths – I have attached the link to the videos – https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-4/. The worksheets and the answers are attached as PDFs.

  • Monday – interpret charts (you should remember using pictograms in Year 3).
  • Tuesday – comparison, sum and difference.
  • Wednesday – introducing line graphs.
  • Thursday – line graphs.
  • Friday – carry out your own investigation – start with a question about something you want to find out e.g. which is the most common colour/make/model of car that comes past my house in 10 minutes? What is the most common bird in my garden in 30 minutes? What is the favourite type of food in my family (give a few options for people to choose from and have an ‘other’ option if needed? There are some templates attached and on Purple Mash. Be as creative as you like – feel free to send your results to me on our lapwing email address from an adult’s email address!

-Make a prediction of what the result will be before you start so you can see if you were right or not.

^ You can use a tally chart to collect the initial results, ^^ then have a go at showing this in another way, ^^^ how many different ways can you show this data (pictogram, bar chart, line graph, pie chart?

-Discuss what you have found out with an adult at the end – why might these have been the results?

  • Discovery Education – please go to KS2 maths, maths activities – resource box, choose statistics dropdown on the left hand side selection bar and there are 4 activities to choose from. Login details below:

1. Go to https://www.discoveryeducation.co.uk/

2. Click on the log in button – top right-hand corner lock icon.  Scroll down to espresso option.

3. Type in school username and password.

    • EASIER ^ I have attached 4 clear and straightforward sheets for the week focusing mainly pictograms and an introduction to bar charts this week from the abacus eBooks. There is a sheet for 4 days then please carry out an investigation with the tally chart on Friday too.

BBC bitesize videos – https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z7rcwmn’Tables, charts and graphs’ and https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zg4d2hv ‘understanding pictograms’.

    • HARDER ^^^ If you would like extra statistics challenges, there are lots to choose from here https://nrich.maths.org/9074
    • I have also set several related 2Dos on Purple Mash.

Times tables:

  • Monday – can you use some concrete resources in your house to show some of the times tables you are finding harder in arrays? A simple example to give you an idea of what I mean (5 x 2) – toys work just as well!
  • Tuesday – chalk a hopscotch on the ground – choose a times table you still need to learn and times each number by the one you have chosen when you land on it e.g. if I land on 8 and I have chosen to work on the 9s, I would need to work out 9 x 8.
  • Wednesday – there are some good ideas to help you support your child with learning their times tables here https://thirdspacelearning.com/blog/teach-times-tables-pupils-learn-instant-recall-ks1-ks2/.
  • Daily – TT rockstars – I have been beaten twice now on rockslam – keep the challenges coming!

Reading:

There is quite a lot of reading involved with the English work this week, however, if you need any more reading material, please remember to use Oxford Owl eBooks https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/class_user/sign_in or take part in the Silly Squad Summer Reading Challenge. https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/silly-squad-bc-landing

Spelling – I have been checking that we have looked at all of the Year 3 and 4 words over the course of the year, this week I would like you to focus on words to do with maths. ^^^ Can you explain how each of them link to maths? Do some ‘look, cover, write, check’ to test how many you can spell.

^^ List A:

Answer, Calendar, Circle, Early, Eighth, Eight, Position, Increase, Length, Minute, Quarter, Weight, Regular, Question, Straight, Guide.

List B:

^ Away, Long, After, Two, Take, Find, More, Round, Through, Way, Stop, Right, Work, Small, Three, Many, Time, Some.

Spelling challenge this week – write A-Z down a page, use a dictionary to find an interesting/new word – write it next to the letter and find out what it means. This is a great way to extend your vocabulary – check any you are not sure of with an adult first. Could you share some of these on our class blog on Purple Mash? Could you use some in your setting description writing this week?

English:

We are basing our English on Alex Rider this week. You will need the booklet which is attached as a PDF, the resources can also be found here https://bit.ly/Walker_Books. There are videos of the author, Anthony Horowitz reading each chapter too. You can also find them on the Walker Books Youtube Channel as well (https://www.youtube.com/user/WalkerBooksUK/videos).
