Wren Class w/c 27th April

Hello lovely Wren Class,

We hope you have had a nice weekend. We enjoyed seeing all the things you got up to last week on Tapestry. Some of you have been very busy!

Today, we have given you some Maths and Literacy learning activities for the whole week. These activities will help you to remember all the things we learnt in school as well as learning something new too. We have tried to make sure that each activity only takes between 10 and 20 minutes, so hopefully you will be able to get through them all.

Don’t forget to look at the ‘family challenge’ activities on the website as well. The Maths and Literacy activities are the most important things for you to complete, but you may enjoy one (or more) of the family challenges too.

Spencer has seen that the ‘family challenges’ this week are all about animals. This has made him think about other types of bears around the world… polar bear, brown bear, grizzly bear, panda. He has come up with a new challenge for his Wren class friends …

A message from Oscar

Oscar has written you a note. He has tried hard to remember his finger spaces but I think he has made a few mistakes on the way. Can you spot 3 mistakes and say “It’s OK Oscar…” and then tell him what he needs to do to improve his work. You could try and write the new sentence out on your whiteboard and show him how the sentence should be written. Clue: look at the capital letters and the ending! I think someone has stolen a letter too – I wonder who it could be? Perhaps it’s Ollie the little Orangutan…… he is rather cheeky!

PHONICS

Read, Write, Inc. are continuing to release new Speed Sound lessons daily, on their Facebook and You Tube page. These lessons follow the same structure we would follow in our daily phonics lessons in school. The Set 2 Sounds are shown live at 10 a.m. They are available on You Tube for 24 hours after being released.

The table below shows which sound will be taught each day. We strongly recommend your child watches these to help develop their phonics skills, ready for when they move to year 1.

Each week our phonics activities will contain 3 days learning to spell some tricky red words. This is important for the children to learn and will help them develop their writing as they move into year 1. The words we provide cannot be sounded out, so children will need to learn to spell them from memory. We will provide some games to help children learn these words.

Monday

Speed Sound lesson: ow

Spelling words: the, to

Write the words ‘the’ and ‘to’ on a piece of paper. Explain they are tricky words and they cannot be sounded out. Talk to your child about the letters in these words. Print out the tricky word sheet and the bottom of the page and encourage your child to complete. If you do not have a printer, encourage your child to write each word three times.

Tuesday

Speed Sound lesson: oo (long sound)

Spelling words: the, to

Make your spelling words out of interesting objects. You could use play dough, sticks from the garden or draw them in shaving foam.

Wednesday

Speed Sound lesson: oo (short sound)

There are two tricky word spelling games set as 2Do on Purple Mash. Have a go at these games and see if you can spell the words correctly.

Thursday

Speed Sound lesson: ar

Play the Frog Phonics game. The aim of the game is to get Fred the Frog back to his home.

Print out the gameboard and playing pieces (from the bottom of the page). Ask an adult to help you cut out the frog and the lily pads.

Place Fred the Frog on the left hand bank.

Ask a grown up to make a word using the lily pads. Place them across the pond.

Read the word laid out. Once you read it correctly Fred the Frog can jump across the lily pads to get home. Try again using different words.

Click on phase 3 – here you will find some videos of the ‘special friends’ we have been learning. Do not watch any videos for sounds you have not yet learnt!

Click on the activities section. Scroll down to the ‘oo short, oo long, ar, or’ section. Complete any of the games in this box.

Listen carefully and tell an adult what words in the story rhyme with the following words:

Wednesday:

Look at the rhyming words sheet (at the bottom of the page). Write another word that rhymes with the words given.

Thursday:

Use your words from yesterday to make a rhyming silly sentence. For example, the sun ate a bun.

Remember, to sound out words on your own using all the sounds you have learnt so far. Don’t forget capital letter at the start, full stop at the end and finger spaces.

Friday:

Follow the instructions below to make your own Oi Frog.

MATHS: DOUBLING

Monday:

Watch the Mr Double Trouble song (link below) and talk about happens to Mr Double Trouble and the problems he has. Try and learn the song and join in with the children singing it.

Tuesday:

Watch the song and sing along again if you want to.

Use two dice to look at the doubles 1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4 and 5+5. Talk about how you can find the answer by counting all the spots together. You could also keep the first number in your head and count on using your number line and frog from last week.

Wednesday:

Oscar is so excited he can work with you again. Look at Oscar’s doubles facts. What has he done wrong? Remember to say “It’s OK Oscar…… this is how you do it. You could write them on a whiteboard and take a picture to show him the correct answers if you would like to.

Thursday:

Get someone in your family ask you your doubles facts to 5 (or 10 or higher if you can!) and see how quickly you can answer them. Learning double facts off by heart is really helpful when you go to Year 1. You could try and beat a timer or see how many you can get right in a minute if they are mixed. Quick fire questions throughout the day are a great way to keep them in firmly in your brain.

Friday:

There are lots of ladybirds around in Spring. See if you can play this ladybird doubles game to help you remember your double facts.
