Here are some more activities for you to try at home.

Reading 

This week please logon to Espresso  

  • Click on Key Stage 2 
  • Click on English and scroll down to Comprehension – lower, or,  
  • As a challenge, click on Comprehension – upper 

Here you will see several links to extracts from some wonderful books.  You may choose any of the extracts to read, but I recommend ‘The Lost Happy Endings’ or ‘The Last Wolf’.  After reading you can click on ‘Take the quiz’ and ‘Print further questions’.  You should discuss your reading with an adult in your family, or an older sibling.  Use the quiz and the further questions to help you talk about the story and understand the text more deeply.  

Remember that these are just EXTRACTS from books, just a little taster.  If you enjoyed reading them you might like to buy the book and read the whole story, or look for an audio version online.  If you did enjoy the extract, don’t forget to recommend it to one of your friends! 

Writing 

Please continue to write an entry in your diary every day. 

Also, this week, I would like you to continue developing your non-fiction writing.  Have a look at how the attached non fiction text examples (also known as non-chronological reports) have been presented, organised and laid out.  Choose a subject to write about.  This can be a subject you started writing about last week, e.g. pirates, skeletons, or one of your own, or it could be Africa or drums which we also looked at last week.  

  • Research your subject and make notes first 
  • Then extend your notes in to sentences of your own – at this point make sure you use the Year 3 writing targets document to help you create, edit and develop fantastic sentences that will interest your reader 
  • When you have lots of great sentences, decide how to lay them out on paper to make them look interesting and attractive to the reader, are you going to add drawings, photos, diagrams? 
  • Can you use colour to improve the look of your text? 
  • You could handwrite your text of use a program such as WORD , POWERPOINT or PUBLISHER if you have access 

Maths 

  • Join in today at www.iseemaths.com with their online Maths lessons. Each lesson helps you to investigate numbers in lots of different ways using the mathematical skills we have learnt in class.  You can pause the videos at any point to practice or ask a member of your family for help.  You can also rewind the videos to listen to the explanations or instructions again.  The previously broadcast lessons are also available to watch if you haven’t seen them yet.  Click on the menu and choose Year 3 & 4. (There are also lessons for Y5 & 6).  

SPAG (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation) 

Use your eggs that you get at Easter to write some fun sentences using the noun ‘Easter Egg’ as your starting point. You need to add an adjective and a verb to say how you ate it and an adverb to describe how you ate it further e.g. My enormous Easter Egg was scoffed loudly by my naughty little sister when I wasn’t looking. or My shiny Easter Egg was devoured secretly by me when I found it in the cupboard. Shhhhh! 

Physical activity 

Egg and Spoon Races 

Materials: Eggs (real or plastic), Spoons, Area to run. 

Instructions: 

  1. Determine the start and finish lines 
  2. Give each child a spoon and egg. 
  3. Have them place the egg on the spoon. 
  4. Have a countdown, “On your mark, get set, GO!” 
  5. The first one across the finish line wins. 

Game Tips: Variations could include relays and obstacle courses.  

Easter Bunny Tag – This a fun Easter activity. Easy to play and no materials needed. Played the same as a traditional game of ‘Tag’ or ‘It’ except that everyone must hop. If you do anything but hop then you’re automatically it. 

Cardboard Egg Hop – Materials: Cardboard, Scissors, Paint, markers, or crayons 

Instructions: 

  1. Draw and cut out two large cardboard eggs for each team. 
  2. Decorate them with paint, markers, or crayons. 
  3. Have each player choose a teammate and give each pair of players two eggs. 
  4. For each pair, there is a hopper and a helper. Starting at one end of the room, the helper places an egg on the floor in front of the hopper, who hops onto it with both feet. 
  5. The helper then places the other egg a little way ahead and the hopper jumps onto it. 
  6. This continues until the pair gets to the end of the room. Now players change roles. The first pair back to the starting line wins. 

This can be played as a relay. When one team returns, the next two people in line continue! Also when young children play this—–just play and hop! This doesn’t need to be a competitive game

Hopping Challenge – This can be played in a circle game, a line, or as a “Bunny Says____” game. Give children a variety of “hopping” commands such as: 

  • Hop in one place 
  • Hop and turn in a circle at the same time 
  • Hop on left/right foot 
  • Hop backward, sideways, make a square or circle 
  • Hop over a line 
  • Hop with a partner 
  • Hop to different rhythms (clap hands, use drum, music, etc…)
